The Problem With Big PDFs

A 200-page report, a scanned archive, a multi-chapter manual — large PDFs are useful for storage but impractical for sharing. Email size limits block them, recipients scroll endlessly to find the relevant section, and version control becomes a headache when everyone is working from different pages of the same file. Splitting that large PDF into focused, purpose-sized chunks solves all three problems at once. Our free online PDF splitter handles this entirely in your browser — no upload, no account, no waiting.

Pick Your Splitting Method

The tool offers three distinct modes because different situations call for different approaches:

  • By Page Range — Type ranges like 1-10, 15, 20-30 and each group becomes a separate file. Best when you know exactly which pages belong together.
  • Every N Pages — Divide the whole document into equal-sized chunks automatically. Set N to 10 and a 40-page PDF becomes four 10-page files.
  • All Pages Separate — One output file per page. The fastest way to turn a scanned batch into individual items.

Real-World Splitting Scenarios

  • Separate individual invoices from a month-end batch PDF so each can go to a different vendor
  • Break a textbook chapter out of a 500-page PDF to share with a study group
  • Reduce file size by sharing only the relevant section of a report — Compress PDF can shrink it further before sending
  • Create handout packets from a long slide deck by splitting every 6 pages
  • Meet upload limits on portals that reject files above a certain size threshold
  • Distribute tasks from a project document by sending each team member only their relevant pages

Split vs Extract — Choosing the Right Tool

Split PDF is systematic — it divides the whole document by a rule (ranges, intervals, or one-per-page). Our Extract Pages tool is selective — you click the exact page thumbnails you want and save those as a single new file. Use Split when the division follows a pattern; use Extract when you are hand-picking a non-obvious set of pages from a larger document.

Output Quality and File Integrity

Splitting never degrades quality. Pages are copied from the source document unchanged — no re-rendering, no re-compression, no conversion. A page with a 300 DPI scanned image comes out of the split at exactly 300 DPI. Text remains fully selectable. Embedded fonts remain embedded. The only thing that changes is which pages are in each output file.

Processed Locally — Nothing Leaves Your Browser

All splitting uses the open-source pdf-lib library running in your browser tab. Your PDF is never transmitted to a server. This makes the tool safe for confidential documents — court filings, tax documents, medical records, signed contracts — that must not be uploaded to third-party cloud services.
