PDFs are vector-based documents with no fixed pixel resolution — the DPI setting you choose determines how the tool rasterises (converts to pixels) each page. Choosing Between JPG, PNG, and WebP

The right format depends on what the converted images will be used for. JPG is the go-to choice when file size is the primary concern. It uses lossy compression that removes subtle visual information the human eye tends not to notice, producing files that are 5–10× smaller than equivalent PNG files. JPG works perfectly for PDF pages with photographs, gradients, or complex colour fills. However, JPG does not support transparency — any transparent areas in a PDF page will be filled with white. It also introduces slight compression artifacts around sharp edges and thin text at lower quality settings.

PNG uses lossless compression, meaning no image data is discarded. Every pixel in the output exactly matches the rendered PDF page. This makes PNG the correct choice for text-heavy documents, technical diagrams, line art, charts, and any content where crisp edges and accurate colours matter more than file size. Developed by Google, it supports both lossy and lossless modes, handles transparency like PNG, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than equivalent JPGs at the same perceptual quality. The one limitation is software compatibility: while all modern browsers and operating systems support WebP natively, some older applications and image editors may not recognise the format. PDF to image conversion rasterises the page, which means all text in the output becomes pixels — no longer selectable, searchable, or editable. If you need to extract and edit the text content of a PDF, use a PDF-to-Word or PDF-to-Excel converter instead. If you need searchable text preserved alongside images (as in a document archive system), you would need an OCR step after conversion to recreate the text layer.

This tool also works best with standard text-based PDFs. Highly complex PDFs containing interactive elements, JavaScript, 3D objects, or heavy use of unusual fonts may not render perfectly in PDF.js — the same limitation applies to most browser-based renderers. For scanned PDFs that are simply images embedded in a PDF wrapper, the conversion will work but the output quality will reflect the quality of the original scan. No browser-based tool can sharpen or enhance a low-resolution original.
