How to Delete Pages from a PDF

When Do You Need to Delete PDF Pages?
PDF files often come with unwanted pages that you need to remove before sharing or using the document. Scanned documents frequently include blank separator pages inserted during scanning. Multi-page forms often have instruction pages at the beginning that are useful for filling out the form but unnecessary afterward. Reports downloaded from online systems may have cover pages, copyright notices, or appendices that are not relevant for your specific use.
Legal and business documents sometimes include pages from other files that were merged accidentally. E-books and PDFs from content management systems may have layout pages, footers, or metadata pages that were not meant for external distribution. Being able to quickly remove unwanted pages without installing software or uploading documents to cloud services is a common need across many professions. This tool provides that capability directly in your browser.

How Page Deletion Works
The tool first uses PDF.js to render each page as a canvas thumbnail — this gives you a visual confirmation of which page is which before you commit to deleting anything. Once you click the Delete button, pdf-lib loads your PDF into memory, identifies every page marked for deletion by its index, and calls doc.removePage(index) for each one in reverse order to keep indices stable as pages are removed.
After all marked pages are removed, pdf-lib serialises the modified document to a new PDF binary stored in your browser memory. The tool does not auto-download — it shows a confirmation screen where you click Download PDF when you are ready. If you want to adjust your selection before downloading, click Edit Selection to return to the grid with your previous marks still active. Your original file on disk is never touched — the tool reads it but never writes back to it. The output PDF inherits all fonts, images, annotations, and formatting from the surviving pages without quality loss.
Two Ways to Select Pages — Thumbnails and Range Input
Most online PDF tools force you to choose one approach: either click through a visual grid or type page numbers into a text box. This tool gives you both at the same time, so you can use whichever is faster for your situation.
For documents where you recognise pages visually — scanned forms, reports with distinctive charts, or PDFs with varied layouts — clicking the thumbnails is the fastest route. A red border, faded preview, and DEL label instantly confirm which pages are marked. Use Shift+click to mark a continuous range between two thumbnails in one action, or Ctrl+A to mark everything and then click individual pages to unmark the ones you want to keep.
For documents where you already know which page numbers to remove — for example, "delete pages 1, 5, and 8 through 12" — type that directly into the Pages to Delete field: 1, 5, 8-12. Click Apply and the grid highlights those pages immediately. You can combine both methods: apply a range first to mark the bulk of your selection, then fine-tune by clicking individual thumbnails to add or remove specific pages. Alternative Approach: Extract Instead of Delete
Sometimes it is easier to think about which pages to KEEP rather than which to DELETE — especially when you have a long document and only need a few pages from it. In that case, the PDF Page Extractor is a better workflow. Instead of marking pages for deletion, you click pages to select which ones to include in the output PDF. This is mathematically equivalent — extracting pages 3, 5, 7 produces the same result as deleting all other pages — but the mental model is different and one approach will feel more natural depending on the situation.

The delete tool is most useful when you have a specific set of unwanted pages scattered throughout an otherwise good document.
Privacy and Document Security
Deleting pages from a PDF locally means that confidential documents stay confidential. If you need to remove certain pages from a contract, medical record, financial statement, or legal filing before sharing, using an upload-based tool creates a security risk — the complete original document (including the pages you wanted to delete) is transmitted to and stored on a third-party server.
This tool processes everything within your browser tab. The complete PDF (including the pages you delete) is only ever in your device's browser memory, and only the final edited version (without the deleted pages) is saved to disk. Once you close the browser tab, the file data in memory is released. For documents containing personally identifiable information, financial data, or privileged legal content, local processing is the appropriate security posture.
Working with Large PDFs
Generating thumbnails for large PDFs (100+ pages) can take a noticeable amount of time because each page must be individually rendered. The tool shows a loading message during this process. For very large documents, the thumbnail generation may take 30–60 seconds in the browser depending on your device's speed and the PDF's complexity. The actual deletion operation after thumbnail generation is fast regardless of the document size.
If you only need to remove a few known pages from a very large document, consider using the Split PDF tool to first split the document into sections, then reassemble the sections without the unwanted parts using Merge PDF. This approach avoids the thumbnail rendering time for large documents when you already know the page numbers.
When Not to Use This Tool
This tool is designed for single-PDF page deletion and does not support batch operations across multiple PDFs. If you need to remove the same page (e.g., cover page) from many PDFs, each file must be processed individually. The tool also does not support removing pages from encrypted PDFs where viewing is restricted — unlock the PDF first using the Unlock PDF tool, then use this tool to delete pages. For complex operations where you need to delete pages, reorder remaining pages, and merge with other PDFs all in one step, doing each operation separately with the respective tools is the recommended approach.
