Search "3D dice roller" and a lot of results either look like a plain procedural render or, worse, six separate face images stitched onto a cube with visible seams and mismatched lighting at every edge. This one uses a single consistent material — identical gradient, bevel and rounded corners on every face — with pip artwork sourced from real dice photography layered on top, so the cube reads as one solid, seamless object rather than six panels glued together.

Decided First, Animated Second

The result is picked the instant you click — a fair, equal 1-in-6 draw — and only then does the cube work out how far to spin so that face lands flat and facing you. Nothing about the outcome is left to chance once the animation starts; the spin is presentation layered on top of an already-settled number, not the mechanism deciding it.

Why It Doesn't Use Real Physics

An earlier build of this tool actually did simulate gravity, bounce and tumble in full 3D. It looked promising on paper and fell apart in practice — dice could settle at odd, hard-to-read angles, or occasionally render outside the visible tray entirely. Physics simulations are unpredictable by nature, which is exactly the wrong trait for a tool whose one job is showing a clear, unambiguous number.

Exact rotation math replaced it instead: the die's final orientation is computed straight from the result rather than discovered after the fact through simulation, so it lands flat, fully in frame, face-on — every time, with nothing to double-check.

Why Multiple Dice Don't Move in Lockstep

Roll more than one die and each one starts its 2.5-second tumble 140 milliseconds after the last, rather than all six firing on the exact same frame. That small stagger is doing real work: dice landing in perfect unison read as artificial, a giveaway that they're all just copies of one animation rather than independent objects — the same reason real dice thrown together from a cup never land in perfect sync either. The stagger is short enough that a full 6-dice roll still finishes in under two seconds longer than a single die, but long enough that each landing reads as its own event.

The dice-clatter sound follows the same offset per die, so the audio has a natural, slightly scattered rhythm to it instead of one clean synchronized clack — another small detail aimed at making six dice feel like six separate objects landing rather than one animation played six times over.

Working Out a Modifier Roll, Step by Step

A "3D6+4" roll — three six-sided dice, add 4 to the total — plays out here exactly as it would on a tabletop, just without needing to add anything up by hand. Set the dice count to 3, the modifier to +4, and each die still resolves completely independently: three separate 1-in-6 draws, three separate tumbles, three separate final faces. The total shown underneath is simply those three numbers summed, plus the flat +4 added once at the end — never applied to each die individually, the same convention every tabletop system built around modifiers uses.

That distinction matters because a modifier changes the total, not the odds on any single face — a +4 doesn't make a 6 more likely to come up, it just shifts what the sum means once the dice have already landed. Roll history records the final total including the modifier, so scrolling back later still shows what the group actually needed to beat or match, not just the raw dice values on their own.

Getting the Best Results From It

Set the modifier once at the start of a session rather than re-entering it every roll — it stays put until changed. Keep the dice count to something readable, 2-4 at a time, since 6 tumbling dice at once can make it genuinely hard to track which is which mid-roll. If Something Seems Off

Dice look frozen partway through a roll? Give it a moment — the full tumble-and-land animation runs a second or two, and with several dice staggered slightly against each other, the last one can still be settling after the first few already have.

No sound at all? Check Sound Effects is switched on and the tab itself isn't muted — some browsers also block audio until the page has been interacted with once, which the first roll's click already covers.

Need a D20 or another die type? Not supported yet, deliberately — this stays D6-only for now so one die type could actually be done well instead of several done adequately.

Not Built For

Anything with real financial or legal weight riding on the outcome — a cash wager, a contractual tie-breaker — belongs with a purpose-built, audited random number service instead; this is genuinely fair for casual and tabletop use but produces no audit trail. And since it's D6-only, a system needing D4, D8, D10, D12, D20 or percentile dice will need a different tool for those specific rolls.
