Transparent PNG Maker

Erase or restore a background by hand with a magic wand click or a freehand brush, feather the edges so the cutout doesn't look pasted, then download a transparent PNG. Full manual control for the images automatic AI tools struggle with โ€” logos, flat graphics, and uneven backgrounds.

How to Make a Transparent PNG

1Upload an image โ€” it loads onto the canvas at a fit-to-screen zoom level, ready to edit.
2Pick Erase or Restore, then Magic Wand or Brush โ€” click a background region with the wand, or paint freehand with the brush.
3Fix any mistakes with Restore mode and adjust the Feather slider so the new edge blends smoothly instead of looking cut out.
4Click Download PNG โ€” the transparent areas export as true alpha transparency, at your image's original resolution.

Features

Magic wand erase & restore
Click a connected color region to erase it, or a connected transparent region to bring it back.
Freehand brush
Paint transparency in or out regardless of color โ€” the better tool for shadows and uneven backgrounds.
Bounded edge feathering
Softens only the edge you just created, so earlier edits are never re-blurred.
Zoom from 10% to 400%
Zoom in tight to clean up fine detail, then zoom back out to check the whole image.
Hover preview
See exactly which pixels the wand would select before you click.
Undo and redo
25 steps of history in either direction, plus a one-click reset to the original image.
Adjustable tolerance
Control how broad or narrow a color or transparency range the wand selects in one click.
No upload, no account
Every edit and the final export happen entirely on your device using the Canvas API.

Removing a Background by Hand, Precisely

A transparent PNG maker removes the background from an image and saves the result as a PNG file with an alpha (transparency) channel, so the erased areas show whatever is behind them instead of a solid color. This version is manual by design โ€” instead of one AI guess at what the "subject" is, you choose exactly which pixels disappear, using a magic wand for fast flood-fill selection or a brush for freehand control.

It complements, rather than replaces, the AI-based Background Remover on ToollyX. The AI tool is faster for a typical photo of a person, animal, or product. This tool is better when the image isn't a typical photographic subject at all โ€” a logo, a screenshot, a diagram, or any flat graphic an AI segmentation model wasn't trained to recognize.

How Wand, Brush, and Feathering Work

The Magic Wand starts from the pixel you click and spreads outward to every connected pixel within your tolerance setting โ€” measuring color difference in Erase mode, or transparency difference in Restore mode. This means it only affects one connected region per click: the inside of an enclosed shape, like the hole in a letter "O" or a ring logo, needs its own separate click, since it isn't connected to the outer background.

The Brush ignores color and paints a soft-edged circular stamp wherever you drag it, blending toward full transparency or full opacity rather than cutting a hard-edged hole โ€” which is why it holds up on shadowed or gradient backgrounds where no single wand tolerance setting can separate the background cleanly. After either tool finishes an edit, Feather Edges runs a small blur limited to just that edit's bounding box, so the boundary softens without re-blurring parts of the image you already finished working on.

Who Actually Needs Manual Control

Designers preparing logos and icons that only exist as a JPG with a white or colored background, for use on colored or branded backgrounds.

Sellers and marketers cleaning up a product photo where the AI Background Remover left a soft or slightly inaccurate edge that needs a manual touch-up.

Anyone working with screenshots or diagrams โ€” flat, non-photographic content that automatic AI segmentation models weren't trained to detect.

From a Logo Cutout to a Sticker Sheet

Making a JPG logo usable on a colored background: Upload the JPG, select Erase + Magic Wand, click the white background once, and download โ€” most flat-background logos take one click.

Fixing an AI background-removal result: Run the image through Background Remover first, then open the download here and use Restore mode with the brush to bring back any part of the subject that was accidentally erased, or Erase mode to clean up a stray patch of background the AI missed.

Removing a background with visible shadow: Switch to the Brush tool and paint the shadow area away directly โ€” the brush doesn't care that the shadow is a different color from the rest of the background, unlike the wand, which needs one consistent tolerance setting to work.

Every Edit Happens Right on Your Device

Every click, brush stroke, and the final export are computed locally with the Canvas API โ€” your image is never sent to a server while you work, which matters for unreleased product photos, client work under NDA, or anything you simply don't want touching a third-party service. It also means there's no network delay between a click and the result โ€” every edit updates the canvas immediately.

Getting Clean Edges Around Fine Detail

  • Start with the wand, finish with the brush โ€” clear the bulk of a flat background in one or two wand clicks, then switch to the brush for edge touch-ups.
  • Zoom in before cleaning up fine detail โ€” small enclosed holes and thin edges are much easier to hit accurately at 200โ€“400% zoom.
  • Use a low feather value for logos, higher for photos โ€” crisp geometric edges usually look best at 0โ€“1px, while photographic subjects often look more natural with 2โ€“4px.
  • Lower the tolerance if the wand eats into your subject โ€” a lower value keeps the selection tighter to the exact color you clicked.
  • Convert a compressed JPG to PNG first with the Image Converter if heavy JPEG artifacts are making a clean background messy.
  • Compress the final PNG with the Image Compressor โ€” transparent PNGs with large empty areas often shrink significantly.

Why an Edge Might Look Rough

The wand erased part of my subject too. This happens when the subject shares a similar color with the background near your click point. Lower the tolerance and click again, or switch to Restore mode and brush the mistakenly erased area back to opaque.

There's a hard, visible edge around my cutout. Increase the Feather Edges value before making your next click or stroke โ€” feathering is applied per-edit, so an already-crisp edge needs a small touch-up brush stroke over it with a higher feather value to soften retroactively.

The hole in a letter or ring shape won't clear. That enclosed area is a separate connected region from the outer background โ€” zoom in and click or brush inside it directly; the outer background click can't reach it.

A shadow keeps getting left behind or eating into the subject. Switch to the Brush tool โ€” it paints based on where you drag, not color, so it handles gradients and shadows the wand tool can't cleanly separate.

When Automatic Removal Is a Better Fit

Don't use this tool if you want a single one-click result on a typical photo of a person, animal, or product โ€” the AI-based Background Remover will usually get there faster with less manual work.

Don't use it for a simple circular crop โ€” the Round Image Cropper is a faster, more precise path to a clean circular cutout.

Don't expect pixel-perfect results on very fine detail like flyaway hair without zooming in and spending real time with the brush โ€” manual tools trade speed for control, and fine detail takes patience regardless of which tool you use.
