All pay period conversions ultimately go through the annual figure: Annual = Hourly × (Hours/day × Days/week × Weeks/year). From annual, every other period is derived: Monthly = Annual ÷ 12. Getting the weeks-per-year figure right matters more than people expect — the default assumption of 52 weeks ignores paid holidays and vacation, which for most salaried employees means the true number of weeks actually worked is closer to 48-50. Using the honest, lower figure produces a more accurate hourly-equivalent for a salaried role, since that salary is effectively being earned over fewer working weeks than a naive full-year calculation assumes.

One company offers ₹1,20,000/month. Another offers ₹15,50,000/year. A startup offers ₹800/hour with flexible hours for 6 hours/day. Converting all three to annual: Company A = ₹14.4 lakh. Non-cash factors deserve equal weight in the actual decision even though they don't show up in the conversion — a role offering slightly lower cash compensation but flexible hours, full remote work, or genuinely better work-life balance can be worth more in practice than the raw numbers suggest, especially when the flexibility translates into real hours saved on commuting or the ability to take on additional freelance income on the side.

Freelance Rate Setting: What Should You Charge?

Freelancers and consultants often struggle to price themselves correctly. The starting point is your target annual income — say ₹12 lakh. If you plan to work 6 hours/day, 5 days/week, 48 weeks/year (4 weeks for breaks/admin): billable hours = 6 × 5 × 48 = 1,440. Hourly rate = ₹12,00,000 ÷ 1,440 = ₹833/hour. But freelancers pay their own insurance, professional fees, taxes (30% effective tax on income over ₹10 lakh), and have no paid leave. A realistic target: multiply your desired net income by 1.5–2× to arrive at the gross billing rate. So ₹833/hour might realistically need to be ₹1,200–₹1,600/hour to yield ₹12 lakh after-tax and after expenses.

Understanding CTC vs In-Hand Salary in India

In India, Cost to Company (CTC) is significantly different from actual take-home salary. A ₹12 lakh CTC package might include: Basic salary (40–50% of CTC), House Rent Allowance, EPF contributions (employer's 12% of basic), gratuity provisions, medical insurance, leave travel allowance, and performance bonuses. After deducting employee EPF (12% of basic), professional tax, and income tax, the actual monthly in-hand could be ₹70,000–₹80,000 from a ₹12 lakh CTC. This gap between CTC and in-hand is exactly why comparing two job offers by CTC alone can be misleading — a higher-CTC offer with a larger non-cash component (heavier employer PF contribution, more allowances structured as reimbursements rather than cash) can produce lower actual monthly take-home than a lower-CTC offer structured more cash-heavy. Overtime Pay Calculation

To calculate overtime pay, first find your hourly rate using this calculator, then apply the overtime multiplier. In India, the Factories Act requires overtime to be paid at double the ordinary rate. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5× for hours over 40/week. If your effective hourly rate is ₹450/hour and you work 10 overtime hours in a week: Overtime pay = ₹450 × 1.5 × 10 = ₹6,750 (US method) or ₹450 × 2 × 10 = ₹9,000 (India Factory Act method). When This Calculator Shows Different Results Than Expected

The most common reason for unexpected results is not accounting for paid leave in the work schedule. If you set 52 weeks but actually only work 48 weeks after deducting holidays, vacations, and sick leave, your actual hourly rate is higher than calculated (you earn the same annual amount in fewer hours).
