Starting from a precisely documented reference New Moon, the calculation simply measures how many days have elapsed to your chosen date and finds the remainder after dividing by that 29.53-day cycle length. Why the Southern Hemisphere Sees a Mirrored Moon
This is one of the most commonly misunderstood facts about the Moon, and most online calculators simply ignore it. The Moon's phase β how much of it is lit β is identical everywhere on Earth at any given moment; illumination doesn't depend on where you're standing. Orientation does, though. Someone in London and someone in Melbourne are looking at the same Moon from opposite sides of the planet, effectively upside-down relative to each other, so the visual pattern of light and shadow appears mirrored left-to-right between the hemispheres. A waxing crescent that shows its glowing edge on the right in the Northern Hemisphere shows that same edge on the left in the Southern Hemisphere. Traditional Full Moon Names, and Why They Vary
Long before printed calendars, communities tracked the seasons by naming each recurring Full Moon after whatever marked that time of year β an animal's mating season, a harvest, the depth of winter snow. Many of the names in common use today β Wolf Moon in January, Strawberry Moon in June, Harvest Moon in autumn β trace back to a blend of Indigenous American, Colonial American, and European folk naming traditions, later popularised and standardised by almanac publishers. They're genuinely useful as cultural shorthand and a nice bit of context, but they're not an astronomical standard β different regions, cultures, and even different almanacs sometimes assign a different name to the same month's Full Moon, and in months with two Full Moons the second is often separately called a "Blue Moon" regardless of the seasonal name. Moon Phase and Ocean Tides β Where the Connection Actually Comes From
