Turning a Rhythm Into a Number
Every tap is timestamped the instant it happens, using the browser's high-resolution performance clock rather than anything tied to frame rate or rendering speed. What actually gets measured isn't your taps themselves but the gaps between them β the silence, not the sound. Sixty thousand milliseconds make up a minute, so dividing that by the average gap between your last several taps gives beats per minute directly, with no guessing or curve-fitting involved.
Averaging matters more than it might seem. A single pair of taps only measures one interval, and human timing is never perfectly even β one gap might be a touch long, the next a touch short, purely from natural motor variability. Averaging the last up to eight intervals together smooths that noise out, which is why the reading visibly settles and stabilizes the longer you keep tapping, rather than jumping around unpredictably after just two or three attempts.
Early taps in any sequence are the least reliable ones, simply because there's only one or two intervals to average β a single early or late tap has an outsized effect on a two-tap average and almost none on an eight-tap one. The Steady/Unsteady indicator exists specifically to flag this: it looks at how much your recent intervals actually vary from each other, not just what the resulting BPM number says, so a wildly inconsistent set of taps that happens to average out to a plausible-looking number still gets marked Unsteady rather than presented as trustworthy.
From Tempo to Delay Time
Knowing a song's BPM is often just the first step β audio engineers and producers frequently need that tempo translated into an exact millisecond value to dial into a delay pedal, a reverb's pre-delay, or a plugin that doesn't sync to a DAW's clock automatically. A quarter note at 120 BPM is exactly 500 milliseconds; at 95 BPM it's about 631.6. What a Number Like 128 Actually Tells You
Most genres cluster tightly enough around a tempo range that a BPM reading alone is often enough to identify roughly what kind of track you're listening to before you've even named it. House and techno sit around 120-128 BPM, hip-hop and trap typically run 85-100 (or half that, since a slow beat can also be counted as double-time), drum and bass sits distinctly higher at 160-180, and ballads and slow R&B often fall as low as 60-80. A reading that lands cleanly on one of these clusters is usually a good sign the tap was accurate; a number that falls oddly between two common ranges is worth re-tapping to confirm.
This also explains a common source of confusion: the same beat can sometimes be correctly described as either its tempo or exactly half or double that number, depending on whether you're counting the kick drum on every beat or every other beat. A trap beat that feels like a sluggish 75 BPM when you tap the kick is often the same track described as 150 BPM in a DJ's library, because the hi-hats are actually subdividing twice as fast as the kick suggests. Neither number is wrong β they're just counting different things β which is worth keeping in mind if a tapped reading doesn't match what a streaming service or DJ software reports for the same track.
Who Actually Needs to Know a Song's Exact BPM
DJs beatmatching two tracks, producers setting a delay pedal or plugin to lock in with a reference track, cover bands rehearsing a setlist that needs to match the original recordings, dancers and choreographers timing routines to specific counts, and video or podcast editors syncing a cut to a music bed's beat all end up needing the same basic fact β an exact tempo number β even though almost nothing else about their work overlaps. A tap tempo tool is often faster than any of the alternatives (guessing, searching a song database, or opening a full DAW) for getting that one number quickly.

When Tapping Isn't the Best Way to Find a Tempo
Tap tempo depends entirely on your own timing, which makes it a poor fit for tracks with heavy tempo changes, rubato passages, or a beat that's genuinely ambiguous β a free-tempo intro, a rallentando ending, or a polyrhythmic section will all produce an average that doesn't really represent any single true tempo, because there isn't one single tempo to find. For those cases, dedicated audio-analysis software that reads the waveform directly, rather than a human tapping along, will generally do better.
For the overwhelming majority of tracks with a steady, danceable beat, though β which covers most pop, rock, electronic and hip-hop production β tapping along for a few seconds is genuinely fast and accurate enough to trust, and it requires nothing more than the browser tab already open.
